Did You Say ...Underwater? ...that’s the reaction most people give us when they hear "Underwater Hockey" for the first time. Some think we’re joking, but Underwater Hockey actually started back in 1954, and has grown to become an international sport. In the Gatineau-Ottawa region, underwater hockey has been alive and well for over 15 years. Our Club, has over 50 members (men, women and children) ranging in ages from 5 to over 50 (see the NEMO kids in action). Skill levels vary too. Some members are just starting out, trying to hold their breath long enough to get to the bottom of the pool and make a play. While others have played for years, and have felt the excitement of representing Canada in international competitions. In 2008, four (4) of our members competed at the World Underwater Hockey Competitions in South Africa. The next world tournament is scheduled this year (2010) in Colombia.
We’re really excited! As one of the City of Gatineau’s new aquatic partners, we’ll be moving to their new world-class Sports Centre in March 2010. This will not only give us much improved facilities, but the City of Gatineau’s support will allow us to offer better programs for both Beginning Adults and Kids (children between 5 and 10 are known as NEMOs). Not Sure if You’ll Like It? No Problem — Just put your name and e-mail address in the box on the right, and we’ll immediately e-mail you all the details about our special "30 days for a Buck" offer. That’s right, you’ll be able to come out and try UWH for a month, and it’ll only cost you $1.00. You Can Play When It Suits YOU Until we move to the Gatineau Sports Centre (March 2010), we play three (3) times a week (Mondays, Fridays & Saturdays). People can attend as frequently or infrequently as their lifestyle permits. Some people come out all three times, while others can only make it once a week. Everyone is welcome, no matter how busy you are. There’s a Level of Play to Fit You Although the games are pickup and are played to be enjoyed, different sessions do have different levels of play. Saturdays are usually the best times for new players to come out and try the game. On these days the pace of the games are less competitive and intended to offer newer players an introduction to the sport and a chance to get some experience. Mondays are for more experienced players looking for a fast highly competitive game. Wednesdays and Fridays are usually somewhere in the middle. New Members Can Play In Tournaments? Within the Underwater Hockey community, tournaments are held all over the world. The Gatineau-Ottawa Club usually participates in two or three of the regional tournaments each year. Held in Quebec City, Montreal, Guelph and London each tournament usually offers competitions at both A and B levels, which gives an opportunity for new players to play competitively. Win or lose, the tournaments are always fun! ...and there’s after-game activities too! Aside from the normal pick-up games and tournaments, Club members often get together for a variety of social events. But whether its a back yard barbeque, a movie night at a members home, or a weekend at someone’s cottage, there are always a lot of stories, fun and of course the requiste beer and wine.
